Facade design at the Centre for Art in the Tabakquartier

Jury’s statement: Marina Schulze’s design is inspired by the historic tobacco factory site and the cigarette paper tubes processed there. It depicts the paper tubes from above and extremely enlarged, so that they are transformed on the wall into abstract, evocative circular forms. Whilst the circles initially offer a glimpse into the depths, the next moment sees the interior turned inwards, appearing to reach out towards the viewer – depending on one’s position and angle of view. In this way, the artist engages in a sophisticated and fascinating interplay of space, colour and form. The chosen colours, which reflect the play of light and shadow, echo the surroundings, so that, despite the motif’s visual dynamism, a harmonious unity is created in the inner courtyard. Overall, the façade of the Centre for Art features an ornamental pattern that breaks up the austere industrial architecture, thereby making the transformation of an industrial site into the Centre for Art – a hub for creativity – visible and tangible on a visual level.
